I was fascinated by the correspondence from the 18th century between the Japanese Masatsuna Kutsuki, a Japanese daimyo, and the Dutch Isaac Titsingh, senior official of the East India Company. The letters presented interesting personal stories, which are a great source of inspiration for my work. By translating their letters into tangible objects, I want to express a small part of each country’s history. Also to provoke thoughts about the importance of friendship and communication between people from different backgrounds with different values.
